Removal of hair using IPL works by targeting the melanin in the hair with quick pulses of light. This light energy converts to heat within the follicle. When sufficient heat has built up, the follicle will break down and be unable to produce a new hair. This process is most effective in the ‘anagen’ phase of hair growth. Approximately 30% of hairs are in this stage of growth at any one time, therefore, a course of treatments is required. Typically 6-10 treatments is needed at intervals of 4-6 weeks to see long lasting results. Any hair re-growth you do have will be softer and finer than before so it’s very effective if you suffer from ingrown hairs.

IPL treats thread veins by emitting wavelengths of light that are filtered to target the haemoglobin in the veins/broken capillaries. The treatment causes the vein to gradually break down over a number of days until it has disappeared. Only 1-3 treatments are required at 2-3 week intervals.

Photorejuvenation is the broad term used to describe the treatment of photo-ageing which includes

wrinkles, pigmentation and age spots. IPL treatment encourages the skin to repair itself by producing new cells and increasing collagen production. It is a very effective and non invasive form of treatment and requires no down-time. A SkinBase IPL photorejuvenation treatment will not only remove pigmentation and sun damage but also improve skin tone and reduce wrinkles.  For a course of photorejuvenation for pigmentation, sun damage or fine lines and wrinkles we recommend a course of 3-6 treatments, 2-3 weeks apart.

Our approach here will depend on the current condition of your skin. If you are suffering from acne then our recommended treatment plan will include a course of IPL. This kills bacteria and prevents the overproduction of sebum that can cause spots, followed by a course of MD to unblock pores and clear congestion. The number and length of course will depend on the severity of the acne. For acne scarring we will incorporate MD and IPL Photorejuvenation to stimulate collagen, elastin and hyaluronic acid production.

Pigmentation is an overproduction of melanin deposited in the dermis. The causes of pigmentation are varied. Common causes include hormonal triggers and sun exposure. We will use a combination of MD and IPL treatment to lift and remove pigmentation. The number of treatments required will vary depending on a number of factors. Type of lesion, skin type, the degree of sun tan, size and depth of the pigmentation as well as location to be treated influence the treatment plan.
